Wheat Tan Spot

Scientific Name: Pyrenophora tritici-repentis

Control Recommendations   Management Practices   Pesticides

Description:

Tan spot develops on both upper and lower leaves. The lesions initially appear as tan-brown flecks that expand into lens-shaped lesions similar to the lesions produced by the septoria leaf blotch fungus. Tan spot lesions range in size from 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length and are surrounded by a chlorotic (yellow) border. As the lesion matures, the center becomes darker due to the production of air-borne olive-brown spores that can infect other leaves, stems and plants. Temperatures ranging between 60 degree to 82 degree F and periods of dew favor infection. As the wheat matures, the lesions produce oversummering reproductive structures called pseudothecia. The infested straw with pseudothecia remaining after harvest serves as the source of inoculum for the next season's wheat crop.
